As an online platform that enhances emotional intelligence and well-being in the workplace, we pride ourselves on staying up to date by reading whatever we can get our hands on from experts like Brené Brown, Daniel Coyle and Patti McCord.
Here is our first book round-up with some of our favorite reads from AllVoices’ favorite authors, speakers and experts:
Brené Brown is the master of discomfort, tackling tough subjects like vulnerability, shame, belonging, trust, and joy in her most recent book Dare to Lead. As a research professor at the University of Houston Graduate College of Social Work, Brown has spent more than a decade studying what most of us shy away from. Here, she compiles her substantive learnings and offers relevant, timely tools to create lasting change in the workplace. It’s a transformative read that can be workshopped cross-functionally, or used for book clubs at offices around the globe. As a bonus, you can check out Brown’s Netflix special The Call to Courage, released April 2019.
If you ever wanted to know what makes the Navy Seals the Navy Seals, then this is the book for you. New York Times bestselling author and respected journalist Daniel Coyle goes deep inside successful cultures like Google, Disney and Pixar to uncover what it is that makes them tick. Plus, he shares how leaders can tap into specific learnings to create their own workplaces built on trust and a deep sense of belonging. A fascinating and varied read that takes the reader inside many unique cultures and team challenges.
Entrepreneur Chip Conley challenges what it is to age inside of today’s modern workplace and inspires all generations to work collaboratively in this engaging read. Conley was the founder of Joie de Vivre boutique hotels, the second largest boutique hotel firm in North America, which he started at 26. After selling the business in 2008, Conley was later approached by Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky to be his mentor and hospitality expert. The book chronicles his journey inside Airbnb and his newly minted endeavor, The Modern Elder Academy.
Patty McCord is as fantastic an HR leader as they come. She, along with Netflix CEO Reed Hastings, is responsible for building the culture of freedom and responsibility that Netflix is famous for. McCord now supports CEOs and leaders in Silicon Valley looking to replicate her learnings inside hyper-growth startups. She has a straight-talking, take no prisoners HR approach that feels like a breath of fresh air combined with a slight kick in the behind. She also provides relevant, timely tools around team-building, recruiting, as well as policy and procedures.
Infamous tech industry coach Jerry Colonna’s first book, Reboot: Leadership & The Art of Growing Up was released June 18th, 2019. Hailed as the “CEO whisperer” and the one coach who can get even the toughest founder to shed a tear, Colonna runs Reboot Coaching out of Colorado after many years as a successful Venture Capitalist. Here, Colonna shares his radical inquiry process, as well as his own story of personal and professional growth with influences drawn from Buddhism and Jungian theory.
