Benefits of Cross-Generational Awareness — Tiffany Cummings of Zillow

This post is a part of our series, Culture Champions — Spotlighting the actionable advice, tips, tricks and learnings from top ERG leaders who are making a difference in their workplaces and communities.

Meet Tiffany Cummings (she/her/hers), Senior Manager, Client Experience New Construction at Zillow Group. Tiffany is a results-driven business leader with 17+ years of experience leading account management teams. As a leader of a CE team, Tiffany is responsible for keeping a group of individual contributors motivated, engaged and focused on the right things, ensuring her team operates at a high level. Tiffany is also the VP of the ZG over 40 Network. Tiffany joined ZG over 40 with the hopes of shining a light on the wealth of knowledge and experience the 40+ age group brings to the workforce. Tiffany feels that it is critical to have a multigenerational workplace in order to appeal to, relate to, and to help all our customers unlock life’s next chapter.

As a Senior Manager, Client Experience New Construction at Zillow Group what has best prepared you to manage people and why?

When my children were young I got involved in youth programs by taking on leadership roles on various boards. Through those experiences not only did I learn to manage high-stress parents :) I was fortunate enough to meet other community leaders, one, in particular, became my mentor who really guided me throughout the beginning stages of my career in management.

What was your journey to becoming an employee resource group (ERG) leader of ZG over 40 Network?

I had such a rewarding experience getting involved in the community when my children were younger and now that I am an empty nester, I have been looking for another opportunity to get involved in my community. I love the idea of a multigenerational network. I believe if we surround ourselves with people who are different (whether that’s age, race, gender, sex, etc), we are able to develop a greater understanding for the importance of diversity and how embracing each other’s differences can have a huge impact not only in the workplace but in the world.

What are the goals of ZG over 40 Network? (i.e. internal, external, community, professional development, recruitment, inclusive product design, programming)

To bring awareness to the benefits of cross-generational awareness & the impact it can have and to create an environment that attracts, retains, and develops people of all ages.

Why is it important to you that ZG over 40 Network is a resource for fellow Zillow team members?

To celebrate Zillow’s journey in celebrating diversity. I really believe that there is so much each generation can learn from each other and by celebrating cross-generational awareness, Zillow will be able to cultivate a well-rounded environment.

What are some of your accomplishments over the past year in the employee experience and how would you measure your impact?

I am new to the ZG over 40 council but I am looking forward to 2022 where we will continue to promote a workplace that attracts people of all ages.

How are you celebrated and compensated as an ERG leader at Zillow?

Affinity networks at Zillow are voluntary positions that help create leadership and professional development opportunities for members. In addition, it is a wonderful opportunity to meet new people!

What advice do you have for folks looking to start or lead an ERG within their organization?

Throughout my life I have realized that being involved within your community/network has so many benefits both personal and professional; Discovering what you are passionate about, developing confidence and leadership skills, and creating strong relationships.

What is your call to action for leaders to support the work of ERGs?

Be an advocate for the network (both internally and externally). Support high-level communications for the network

Is there anything else you’d like to share?

Our customers at Zillow are at different life stages in life.  There are so many different reasons why someone would buy, sell or rent a home that to have a team that understands that an empty nester (like myself) might have different needs from somebody who's buying their first home is critical to doing business.
