Forced Ranking

What is forced ranking and how is it used in performance management?

Forced ranking is a performance management technique where managers rank every employee in a group from best to worst, typically with the bottom-ranked employees designated as underperformers subject to development plans or termination. It's closely related to forced distribution but uses ordinal ranking rather than tier allocation. The approach was popularized by Jack Welch at GE and has since fallen out of favor at most major employers due to bias concerns and retention impact.
