What is payroll and what does it include?

Payroll is the process of calculating and distributing employee compensation, including wages, taxes, benefits deductions, and other withholdings. It covers time tracking, gross-to-net calculation, tax withholding and remittance, year-end reporting, and compliance with federal, state, and local wage-and-hour laws. Most employers use specialized payroll software (ADP, Paychex, Gusto, Rippling, Workday) or outsource the function entirely, though the employer remains legally responsible for accuracy.
