What is Human Resources (HR) and what does the function do?
Human Resources (HR) is the organizational function responsible for managing the employee lifecycle: recruiting, hiring, onboarding, compensating, developing, retaining, and (when necessary) terminating employees. HR also handles compliance with employment law, benefits administration, employee relations, and increasingly strategic workforce planning. The function ranges from a single generalist at small companies to specialized teams of hundreds at large enterprises, and the framing has evolved from administrative HR to strategic HR/HCM/People Operations over the past three decades.
